We were fortunate to host guest speakers Angela Dutcher  and Marc Mendelsohn of the Literacy Volunteers program in Sullivan County.  This program is essential to our community, because the rate of illiteracy is significant in our region.  With casinos coming, Ms. Dutcher believes that the need to prepare a workforce that is well educated is  greater than ever.    Fortunately, Literacy Volunteers has a team of about 60 tutors working in their program to help assist those looking to improve their skills.
Part of the organization is the The Read It Again and Past Perfect bookstores they manage. They are a great resource for the community and a source of revenue for the program.  They accept virtually all donated books, except for newer encyclopedias and your donations may be tax deductible.  If you are looking for some good reads, you may want to stop by to browse and purchase some books.
The Literacy Volunteers would like to encourage everyone to promote their program.  If anyone knows of someone that needs reading training or needs to prepare for a GED, please refer them.  Thanks to assistance from the Attain Lab at BOCES on St. John St., which helps to prepare students for the math portion of the GED testing, the program has become even stronger.  The wait list for students needing services is  about 10-15 people long, but there is a training session coming with a number of tutors soon to be available.
Volunteers are needed for tutoring and at the bookstore.  For more information, call the Literacy Volunteers at 794-0017.
Liberty Rotary Club is proud to offer assistance to this worthy and wonderful organization and we are pleased to donate $500 to their efforts.
