Officer Devin Brust has held the job of School Resource Officer for the past two years and is now working with his third DARE class. They discuss consequences, responsibility, alcohol and tobacco.  He found the exclusion of opiates from the program a bit out of touch, as it is so prevalent in our area.  So, he has added information and discussion about this important topic to his program.
The ground rules of class discussion asks students to speak openly, but no specific names are to be mentioned.  He tries to stress the term addiction and help students understand the consequences of their actions and the dangers of substance use and abuse.  Additionally, Devin encourages students to report any concerns they may have about the people in their lives, so that they can get any assistance those near to them may need.
The difference that have evolved in the program since its start is that discussions are more meaningful and relevant to the students.  They focus upon real world problems and the consequences of the decisions that students and adults make.   There is much attention paid to the impact of social media and how students can use it responsibly.  Additionally, discussion about how driving at excessive speed is extremely dangerous.
Devin has a presence in all three schools in Liberty and stops in at St. Peter’s School.  He also assists with arrivals and dismissals.  Overall, he is an ever available resource for our children to speak to about the issues they face in their lives.  As our positive role model and police liaison to our schools, we are fortunate to have Officer Brust influencing and guiding our children.
